3-Chloro-2-methylaniline:An irreplaceable core intermediate in the production of quinclorac

2026.07.03

We are Yixing Wencheng Chemical Co., Ltd., a manufacturer specializing in the methylaniline series—including 3-chloro-2-methylaniline—with 40 years of experience in the production and sales of these compounds and their derivatives. Most of our customers purchase 3-chloro-2-methylaniline to synthesize Quinclorac, a herbicide specifically designed for rice paddies. Quinclorac is a leading global active ingredient for rice herbicides. I will share some valuable information about quinclorac based on our years of experience serving our clients.

Quinclorac is a selective, hormone-type herbicide belonging to the quinoline carboxylic acid class. After being absorbed by the roots and leaves of weeds, the herbicide is translocated to the growing points, where it disrupts the balance of endogenous auxins and induces excessive ethylene production; this inhibits cell division in barnyard grass, causing the twisting of the heart leaf and the rotting and death of roots and stems. Rice plants can rapidly degrade the herbicide through their own metabolic processes, ensuring high safety for the crop and excellent selectivity. It is suitable for use in direct-seeded, transplanted, and seedling-broadcast rice fields and specifically targets barnyard grass (showing exceptional efficacy against resistant strains).

The core raw material for the industrial production of Quinclorac is 3-chloro-2-methylaniline, which is also the primary downstream application product derived from this fine intermediate. The mature mass production process in the industry adopts a four-stage continuous reaction synthesis route, which is stable and has controllable yield. The specific process is as follows: The first step is a cyclization reaction, using 3-chloro-2-methylaniline as the main raw material, combined with glycerol and concentrated sulfuric acid system, and a closed-ring condensation reaction occurs under high temperature conditions of 130~140℃ to generate the key intermediate 7-chloro-8-methylquinoline; The second step is a side chain chlorination reaction, using o-dichlorobenzene as the reaction solvent and AIBN as the initiator, selectively chlorinating the methyl site by introducing chlorine gas to convert the side chain methyl to chloromethyl, to obtain 3,7-dichloro-8-chloromethylquinoline; The third step is an oxidative hydrolysis reaction, in which the chloromethyl is further oxidized to carboxyl group under high temperature oxidation conditions to construct the characteristic functional structure of dichloroquinoline acid; Finally, the crude product is obtained by alkaline dissolution and acidification crystallization, and then refined and purified by recrystallization to finally obtain dichloroquinoline acid technical with a purity of over 98%.

Throughout the entire synthesis chain, the purity of 3-chloro-2-methylaniline and the control of impurities are critical; they directly determine the synthesis yield of quinclorac, the purity of the technical-grade product, and the stability of herbicidal efficacy. It is an irreplaceable, core upstream intermediate for the production of quinclorac. Yixing Wencheng Chemical Co., Ltd. is a high-quality manufacturer of 3-chloro-2-methylaniline, offering a purity of ≥99%.

Quinolinic acid exhibits excellent efficacy against resistant, older barnyard grass in the field, making it a core, essential pesticide ingredient for barnyard grass control in rice paddies. It also boasts a wide application window, high tolerance for farmer errors, and long-lasting effectiveness in the field. Furthermore, the product is highly adaptable to various formulations, including suspension concentrates, wettable powders, and water-dispersible granules, catering to diverse production and application scenarios. At conventional dosages, it is naturally degraded by soil microorganisms, exhibits low toxicity to humans and animals, and demonstrates good overall environmental safety.

The core application of quinclorac is weed control in rice paddies. It is suitable for direct-seeded rice, transplanted rice, and broadcast rice fields. It has outstanding efficacy against resistant barnyard grass and can be applied at the 1-7 leaf stage, with optimal efficacy at the 2-3 leaf stage. A single application can provide long-lasting control of barnyard grass throughout its entire growth cycle. It can also control grass and broadleaf weeds such as Echinochloa crus-galli, Crataegus pinnatifida, and Cyperus difformis. When applying it in the field, a shallow water layer of 1-3 cm should be maintained and the water should be kept for 5 to 7 days to avoid submerging the rice heart leaves with the pesticide solution. Rice seedlings before the two-leaf stage and the heart stage should not be treated with the pesticide. In addition, this product can be used to remove weeds such as crabgrass and foxtail grass in golf courses and green lawns, and can also inhibit excessive summer shoot growth in citrus orchards; at the same time, as a mainstream compound mother drug, it can be combined with pyrimisulfuron, cyhalofop-butyl, and bensulfuron-methyl to eliminate grass, broadleaf, and sedge weeds in paddy fields in one go.
