Industrial production and differentiated applications of tetraethylene glycol-derived TEGDA

Our company is Yixing Wencheng Chemical Co., Ltd., a production plant of polyols, including tetraethylene glycol (TEG). We have been engaged in the production and sales of polyols and their derivatives for more than 30 years. Various ethylene glycol homologues have clear segmented application tracks: triethylene glycol is mostly used in the oil and gas dehydration industry, diethylene glycol's largest downstream market is the polyurethane industry, and tetraethylene glycol mainly targets the electronic technology industry chain. Next, we will break down the key points of the actual industrial production of TEGDA (tetraethylene glycol diacrylate) from tetraethylene glycol from multiple dimensions, including upstream raw material control, industrial production control, product grade classification, differentiated market positioning, production cost control, and industry production pain points.

 

The quality of TEGDA products is directly determined by the control of upstream raw materials.

TEGDA is produced by the esterification of the hydroxyl groups at both ends of tetraethylene glycol and acrylate. Defects in raw materials will be transmitted layer by layer along the production process. Among them, the electronic high-purity TEG, which is specially supplied for FPC flexible circuit board inks, requires a purity of ≥99.5% and a moisture content of ≤0.03%. It controls oligomeric glycols, aldehydes, peroxides, and trace metal impurities. Excessive moisture content can easily produce monoester impurities and reduce diester conversion rate. Oligomeric impurities can cause ink viscosity fluctuations and storage stratification. Aldehydes and peroxides can cause monomer discoloration and storage gelation, which cannot meet the standards for use in electronic workshops. The industrial general-purpose TEG has a purity of ≥99.0% and a moisture content of ≤0.1%. It is used to prepare TEGDA required for general UV coatings, general 3D printing resins, and hydrophilic adhesives.

 

Practical Challenges and Control Strategies in Industrial-Scale Production.

The industrial esterification process for TEGDA involves feeding tetraethylene glycol and acrylic acid at a molar ratio of 1:2.1–2.3. Methanesulfonic acid or p-toluenesulfonic acid serves as the catalyst, while an azeotropic agent facilitates water removal; a composite polymerization inhibitor (MEHQ and phenothiazine) is used alongside a trace air purge to prevent high-temperature spontaneous polymerization. Post-reaction processing includes neutralization, water washing, vacuum recovery of excess acrylic acid, and the removal of light-end impurities. During production, the esterification temperature is controlled between 110-135℃ to avoid material gelation caused by temperatures exceeding 135℃. The washing water temperature should not be too high to prevent monomer hydrolysis and excessive acid value. During the distillation stage, the vacuum level is controlled to avoid monomer degradation and color increase. Ordinary grades only require water washing to remove acid, while PCB electronic special grades also require vacuum distillation to remove monoesters and heteroether acrylate impurities to ensure that the finished product color is ≤30-APHA.

 

Product grading corresponds to different downstream customers.

TEGDA is divided into three grades to suit different customer markets: Electronic high-purity grade has the advantages of low shrinkage, high flexibility, low color intensity and stable acid value, and is specially supplied for flexible circuit board solder resist and character ink; DPGDA and TPGDA correspond to ordinary rigid boards, AI server and new energy PCB rigid board inks respectively, and the three build a complete UV monomer product system. Specialty functional grade products offer excellent hydrophilicity and are supplied for water-based UV resins, dental photosensitive resins, elastic 3D printing materials, TPU plastic topcoats, and medical hydrogel crosslinking agents; general-purpose civilian grade products emphasize high cost-effectiveness and are used in wood coatings, packaging inks, and conventional UV adhesives.

 

TEGDA's competitive advantages over DPGDA and TPGDA: Compared to DPGDA and TPGDA.

TEGDA has the advantage of a longer four-segment ethoxy ether chain: lower curing shrinkage, excellent film flexibility, less prone to cracking when bent, and suitable for flexible substrates; good hydrophilicity makes it suitable for water-based UV curing formulations, and low volatility and weak odor can meet the environmental protection requirements of electronic cleanrooms.

 

Key Points of Cost Control.

In terms of cost control, optimize the ratio of catalysts and polymerization inhibitors to improve diester conversion rate and reduce waste loss; recycle and reuse surplus acrylic acid to save raw materials; implement graded sales, rely on general grade to absorb production capacity and spread equipment expenses, and obtain product premium for high-purity electronic grade TEGDA to improve overall gross profit.

 

Mitigation Strategies for Existing Industry Risks and Production Challenges.

Targeted prevention and control measures have been established to address existing industry risks: to counter market volatility in acrylic products, a buffer inventory of raw materials is maintained; given that monomers are prone to heat-induced polymerization, strict temperature controls are implemented during storage, and stabilizers are added prior to shipment to extend shelf life; and to meet the electronics market's stringent impurity standards, comprehensive testing is conducted on every batch of tetraethylene glycol raw material, thereby preventing impurities from entering the production process at the source.
