We are Yixing Wencheng Chemical Co., Ltd., a company with 40 years of experience in the R&D, production, and sales of methylaniline-series chemicals and their derivatives. As one of the earliest manufacturers of o-toluidine on a large scale in China, we have long served customers in the fields of pesticides, dyes, pharmaceuticals, and oil and gas, accumulating a wealth of first-hand application experience. Today, we'll take the o-toluidine-gasoline antiknock agent industry chain as a starting point and share some real and useful information accumulated over the years. These experiences cannot be of great value if they remain internally, and we hope they can provide inspiration and assistance to our colleagues in the industry.
o-Toluidine is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen and a priority controlled chemical. The artificial addition of o-toluidine as an antiknock agent to automotive gasoline is prohibited. Compliant applications are limited to special unleaded aviation gasoline and niche special fuel formulation research and testing. It is strictly prohibited from being used in the blending of ordinary commercial gasoline. Therefore, its demand is concentrated on specialized tracks. The following content is for chemical technology mechanism and performance analysis only, and should not be used as a guide for commercial addition or blending. All production and blending must comply with domestic fuel regulations, hazardous chemical control and occupational health requirements.
o-Toluidine (2-methylaniline) belongs to the aromatic amine class of free radical-terminated anti-knock components. Its molecular structure consists of a benzene ring with a methyl group and an amino group attached to the ortho position. In the early stages of gasoline compression auto-ignition, hydrocarbon oxidation continuously generates peroxide active free radical chains, which is the source of knocking. The amino N-H bond on o-toluidine can capture and quench these active peroxide free radicals, converting highly active peroxides into stable inert products, interrupting the auto-ignition chain reaction, delaying the premature auto-ignition of the mixture, and suppressing knocking, thereby increasing the fuel research octane number (RON) and motor octane number (MON). It belongs to the ashless type of anti-explosion component, and does not produce metallic ash when burned, which is different from manganese-based and lead-based anti-explosion agents.
It can achieve an increase in octane number with a low addition amount, and the octane gain per unit addition ratio is stable. It does not introduce metal impurities and will not cause metal scale buildup on spark plugs, oxygen sensor poisoning, or failure of the three-way catalytic converter. It exhibits good miscibility and compatibility with oxygen-containing blending components such as gasoline hydrocarbons and MTBE, and offers flexible blending options. It can be combined with other aromatic amines and ether antiknock components to synergistically produce octane. Compared to upgrading refinery units—such as deep reforming or isomerization—using this component to boost octane in specialized fuel applications requires significantly lower capital investment. At the same time, its boiling point is relatively high, so it will not significantly increase the gasoline vapor pressure and is less likely to induce vapor lock problems in summer. As an octane-boosting component for specialized unleaded aviation gasoline and niche, high-octane specialty fuels, o-toluidine serves as a replacement for tetraethyl lead in unleaded formulations, compensating for insufficient octane ratings in base stocks and enabling the development of metal-free, specialized fuel blends. Under specific base oil conditions, it can also reduce the load on demanding units such as deep hydrotreating and reforming, and optimize the overall plant material balance.
Specialty fuels impose stringent quality requirements on o-toluidine. Impurities in o-toluidine can directly affect the storage stability, gum content, color, and toxicity control of oil products. The core requirements for fuel blending grade are: main content ≥99.0%, strict control of isomers such as m-toluidine, p-toluidine, and aniline, moisture ≤0.1%, restriction of low-boiling and high-boiling impurities, control of color, and strict control of the content of metal ions such as iron and copper and peroxides. Isomeric impurities can alter anti-knock efficiency and affect the final boiling point of fuels; moisture and peroxides can accelerate gasoline oxidation, causing gum buildup and discoloration during storage; trace metal ions can catalyze oxidation reactions and exacerbate carbon deposit formation; various impurities can also increase the pressure on the control of toxic substances and exhaust emissions. The o-toluidine produced by Yixing Wencheng Chemical Co., Ltd. boasts a purity of over 99.5%, with moisture and impurity levels that fully meet these demanding requirements.
Key points for the use of o-toluidine in the large-scale production and blending of special fuels: Aromatic amines have an anti-knock saturation effect, and the addition range in conventional trial production should be controlled within 0.5~3%, with high dosage strictly prohibited. The higher the amount added, the more prominent the problems such as carbon buildup, rubber swelling, NOₓ increase, and oil discoloration become. Once the threshold is exceeded, the efficiency improvement of octane will slow down significantly, and the negative risks will amplify rapidly. o-Toluidine has a weaker anti-knock gain than m-Toluidine, and octane number calibration needs to be carried out in advance before compound design. This product is generally not used alone, but is often combined with N-methylaniline and aniline to balance anti-knock effect, freezing point, boiling range T90 and final boiling point. It can also be combined with oxygen-containing agents such as MTBE to adjust octane. It should not be mixed with strong oxidants or strong acid additives to prevent reaction. Classified as a Class 6.1 toxic substance, o-toluidine is a carcinogen capable of being absorbed through the skin. The blending workshop must be sealed and have negative pressure ventilation. Workers must wear impermeable protective clothing and gas masks throughout the entire process to prevent skin contact and vapor inhalation. Blending pipelines must be dedicated and separate from those used for conventional automotive gasoline to avoid cross-contamination. The blended samples must undergo long-term storage stability testing, rubber compatibility testing, and bench emission verification; the finished product ledger must be traced separately to meet the requirements for priority control of the flow of chemicals; wastewater and residual liquid generated during blending must be disposed of as highly toxic hazardous waste and must not be discharged arbitrarily.
