Key Raw Material Tips for Tricyclazole Production: High-Quality Ortho-Toluidine Matters

2026.04.25

We are Yixing Wencheng Chemical Co., Ltd., a professional manufacturer specializing in methylaniline series products and their derivatives. With 40 years of dedicated production and sales experience, we have long served downstream industries including pesticides, dyes and pharmaceuticals.Ortho-toluidine is the core raw material for the synthesis of tricyclazole. Based on our decades of production and operational experience, we have sorted out practical and industry-relevant information about tricyclazole. We believe these valuable insights should be shared with peers in the industry rather than kept internally. We hope our professional sharing can bring new references and practical ideas for your production and development.

Tricyclazole, also known as Blasticidin, Fujione and Pyricut, is a highly systemic protective triazole fungicide with outstanding control effects against rice blast. It can be used as a single agent, or compounded with Kasugamycin, Azoxystrobin, Pyraclostrobin, Epoxiconazole, Isoprothiolane, Propiconazole and Prochloraz to expand the antibacterial spectrum and improve application efficiency.

1. Core Raw Material Requirements

All tricyclazole manufacturers attach great importance to selecting high-quality and stable ortho-toluidine suppliers. The core concerns are concentrated on three aspects:

First, product quality, including purity, harmful impurities, moisture content, color and appearance;Second, long-term stable and sufficient supply capacity;Third, reasonable and competitive pricing.

2. Production Process & Practical Difficulties in Mass Production

The industrial synthesis process of tricyclazole is mature and standardized.

Under the action of catalysts, ortho-toluidine first reacts with sulfuric acid and sodium thiocyanate to generate o-methylphenylthiourea. Then chlorine gas is introduced for cyclization reaction to form 7-methyl-2-aminobenzothiazole hydrochloride. After that, the hydrochloride reacts with hydrazine hydrate to produce 7-methyl-2-hydrazinobenzothiazole. Finally, the target product tricyclazole is obtained through ring-expansion reaction with formic acid.

In actual large-scale production, precise temperature control in the four key stages of addition, cyclization, substitution and ring expansion is essential. Meanwhile, the purity of ortho-toluidine is the decisive factor. The qualified industrial standard requires purity ≥99.5%, and high-end production recommends an index close to 99.8%.

Excessive impurities will directly trigger a large number of side reactions. It will not only reduce the final product yield, but also multiply the difficulty of product purification, greatly extend the purification cycle and increase overall production costs. To produce high-quality tricyclazole and realize cost reduction and efficiency improvement at the same time, high-purity raw materials are indispensable.

As a high-quality professional manufacturer, Yixing Wencheng Chemical provides ortho-toluidine with purity far exceeding the industry standard of 99.5%. In addition to high-quality ortho-toluidine, we also suggest manufacturers select high-purity auxiliary materials such as sulfuric acid and sodium thiocyanate to ensure stable and efficient operation of the whole process.

3. By-Product Recycling to Enhance Cost Competitiveness

We recommend all manufacturers to pay attention to the rational recycling and utilization of production by-products.

For example, effective recovery and reuse of formic acid can greatly reduce raw material consumption and comprehensive production costs, which has been successfully applied and verified among our long-term cooperative customers.

Relying on high-quality raw material supply and systematic cost optimization solutions, we help tricyclazole manufacturers effectively reduce comprehensive costs and build stronger market competitiveness.

4. Ecological Impact of Tricyclazole

Tricyclazole poses slight harm to aquatic organisms, with the 48h LC50 value for carp at 14.6 mg/L. It is safe for bees and has minor impacts on silkworms.

With a half-life of 2.4–13.1 days in rice plants, tricyclazole is an easily degradable pesticide. The degradation rate can reach 82.1%–97.1% within 3 days after application. For the prevention and control of rice neck blast, pesticide application is recommended during the booting and heading stage, with one spray at the early heading stage and the full heading stage respectively for optimal effect.

5. Efficacy and Application of Tricyclazole

Tricyclazole features strong systemic absorption. It can be rapidly absorbed by rice roots, stems and leaves, and transported to all parts of plants. The absorption saturation of rice plants can be reached within 2 hours after spraying. Common commercial formulations include 20% and 75% wettable powders.

Focusing on preventive and protective effects, tricyclazole performs best when applied before disease onset.

For seedling blast: Spray 50–75 grams of 20% wettable powder per mu at the 3–4 leaf stage of seedlings or 5 days before transplanting.

For leaf blast and neck blast: Spray 75–100 grams per mu at the early onset stage or late booting to early heading stage.

For severe disease areas, supplementary spraying is required at an interval of 10–14 days.

In addition, seedling soaking with tricyclazole shows better control effect on leaf blast than conventional spraying, which is simple and labor-saving.

Our high-quality ortho-toluidine and methylaniline series products have been exported to multiple countries and regions, widely used in the synthesis of tricyclazole, Acetochlor, Chlordimeform, Indole, Naphthol, Quinoline, gasoline antiknock agents and red base series dyes.
