The PNS ashless antiwear antioxidant is a sulfur-phosphorus-nitrogen (PNS) composite organic ashless additive synthesized with m-toluidine as the core raw material. It is zinc-free, metal-free and ash-free. Its molecular structure integrates sulfur-phosphorus extreme-pressure groups and aromatic amine antioxidant groups, delivering excellent oil solubility and thermal stability. Featuring multiple properties including extreme pressure wear resistance, high-temperature oxidation resistance, corrosion and rust prevention, the product can replace traditional ZDDP additives and solve the common defects of zinc-containing additives, such as high ash content and exhaust aftertreatment system catalyst poisoning.

It is widely applied in industrial lubricants such as ashless hydraulic oil, industrial gear oil, steam turbine oil and long-cycle circulating oil. 1. Raw Material Scarcity: The Core Bottleneck of PNS Production

m-Toluidine serves as the essential raw material for manufacturing PNS ashless antiwear antioxidant. Globally, m-toluidine cannot be synthesized independently; it is a by-product generated from the methylaniline production process, resulting in limited global production capacity. Moreover, the synthesis of qualified PNS additives requires m-toluidine with a purity of ≥99.5%. The high separation and purification costs make most manufacturers reluctant to produce high-purity m-toluidine.

2. PNS Production Process and Practical Industrial Challenges

PNS ashless antiwear antioxidant additives are mainly synthesized from m-toluidine, 2-ethylhexanol and phosphorus pentasulfide via a two-step reaction process.

First, under nitrogen protection at 85–95℃, long-chain alcohol reacts with phosphorus pentasulfide to form dialkyldithiophosphoric acid intermediates. Subsequently, the system temperature is lowered, and m-toluidine is dropwise added for condensation reaction, combining sulfur-phosphorus structures with aromatic amine structures to form a stable organic sulfur-phosphorus-nitrogen molecular framework.

After the reaction is completed, residual raw materials, acidic impurities and solvents are removed through neutralization, water washing, vacuum desolvation and precision filtration, yielding metal-free and ashless high-performance PNS ashless antiwear antioxidant. The production process features mature technology and mild reaction conditions, and the finished products possess outstanding wear resistance, high-temperature oxidation resistance and anti-corrosion performance.

Notably, the synthesis reaction produces toxic hydrogen sulfide gas. The entire production process requires closed gas collection and alkali liquor absorption treatment to eliminate unorganized emissions, avoid environmental pollution, and prevent hydrogen sulfide poisoning and environmental compliance violations.

 

3. By-product Recycling and Resource Utilization

During PNS production, vacuum distillation can recover unreacted 2-ethylhexanol, toluene, xylene and other organic solvents. The distilled materials can be directly recycled to the production process after simple stratification, dehydration and drying, without deep refining.

This recycling technology boasts high material utilization efficiency, reducing raw material consumption and production costs by 10–20%. It is the most economically beneficial resource utilization method in the entire PNS synthesis process, enabling green, energy-saving and cost-effective industrial production.
